Author Shawn Bean Talks About "The First Hollywood", His New Book About The Rise And Fall Of Hollywood's Earliest Rival

Author Shawn Bean Talks About

Shawn Bean, author of the new book The First Hollywood, was the keynote speaker at an event and book signing presented by the Miami International Film Festival. The book details the quick rise and fall of the once booming film industry of Jacksonville, FL during the early 20th century. The little-known story began as an award-winning, four-page magazine feature and is now the author's first book.

"A couple years ago, there was an art exhibit in Jacksonville and they had these big, beautiful watercolor posters and they were film posters from the silent film era. All of them were posters for films made in Jacksonville," said Bean. "As a kind of a byline in the bottom of the literature for the exhibit, it said 'Jacksonville had a thriving filmmaking industry back in the early 20th century.' Well my writerly instinct kicked in, and I did a little digging and I found that not only did Jacksonville have one of earliest filmmaking hubs in the country, it had THE first filmmaking hub."

It wasn't occupied by small, independent studios. Bean revealed that some of the biggest studios got their start in the Florida city, including Fox and Metro-Goldwyn Mayer.

Barack Obama Fights Off Vampires For #1 On The Amazon Best Seller List

Barack Obama Fights Off Vampires For #1 On The Amazon Best Seller List

President Elect Barack Obama's book, The Audacity of Hope, is #1 on Amazon's Best Seller List this week and the only thing keeping Stephenie Meyer's entire "Twilight" saga from the top spot. Obama's second book was released in 2006 but is at the top on the strength of his victory in the United States election, although I'm sure Amazon's sales price of just $4.39 isn't hurting.

Obama's second entry in the Top 10, the #1 New York Times Best-Seller Dreams from My Father, is at #7 this week, also benefitting from a low sales price.

Vince Flynn's
Vince Flynn's latest political thriller, Extreme Measures, enters the New York Times Best Sellers List at #1. Flynn last hit #1 on the Best Seller List around this time last year was his Protect and Defend, which also debuted at the top. Extreme Measures is the latest thriller centered around counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp who teams up with his protégé, Mike Nash, to fight a terrorist cell.

Last week's #1, The Brass Verdict, by author Michael Connelly, moves down to #2 in its second week in release. The novel teams two of Connelly's most successful characters, defense attorney Mickey Haller and detective Harry Bosch, who come together to solve the case of a Hollywood murder while encountering danger themselves. The Brass Verdict marked Michael Connelly's third #1 on the New York Times Best Seller List.

"The Shack" Continues As #1 Amazon Best Seller

Miami, FL (CNS) -- William P. Young's "The Shack" continues its weekly streak atop the Amazon Best Seller list. The Christian fiction novel about a man who has conversations with God after the murder of his 6-year-old daughter has been #1 on Amazon for weeks, driven by positive word-of-mouth and strong buzz.

"Buyology: Truth and Lies About What We Buy" debuts in the #2 position this week on the Amazon Best Seller list. The book, written by marketing expert Martin Lindstrom, takes the findings from a three-year, seven million dollar neurological marketing study and answers questions about what makes people shop the way they do, including reactions to logos, subliminal messaging, and product placement. The book, released last week, was featured on NBC's The Today Show, ABC News and USA Today.
