The Raven Cafe this week: On the Orient Express, Riding Giants, and Les Bicyclettes Blanches Print E-mail
Local A&E
by Newt Lynn
Well...according to my watch it's late.  How late?  Very.  But this is not the first time time has snuck upon me, and it has yet to stop me from working hard to keep you informed.  We're gonna call this Back-To-School Week at the Raven.

Monday:  Ben and Miguel took a little trip to Asia over the weekend.  Three nights on the Orient Express.  We called it kitchen research, so it's a write-off for us, but for you it is a whole new culinary adventure.  Fried Crab Sushi Rolls, Pork and Lettuce Wraps, Vegetables in Spiced Coconut Milk Soup, Mongolian Lamb, Stir-Fried Duck in Blueberries, Tofu Stir-Fry, Spicy Chicken with Cashews, Korean Style Ribs, and a few other surprises.

Tuesday:  Surf Movie Month has been huge for us.  Seems everyone around here has a bit of love for the sea.  The Tuesday Night Movie, Riding Giants, is maybe my all-time favorite.  Historical, well put together, and just an awesome document of the origins of big wave riding.  8:30pm

Wednesday:  CarCrashLander, from Portland, Or., is the project of Cory Gray who has played the Raven once as a backing musician for Laura Gibson.  Sounds something like Built to Spill's Doug Martsch doing a session with Elliot Smith around the time of Figure 8.  Or maybe it sounds like a seaside highway, late summer, but sometime around sunset... minimal traffic.  Darren Hanlon, from Gympie, Australia will be opening.  Gympie must be a great place.  8pm

Thursday:  Matthew O'Neill and The Birds of Prey, from Pennsylvania.  Matthew has been part of our musical family for years now.  His brand of weirdly maniacal americana barn rock has made him a true individual in the music world.  Sounds something like Neil Young fronting the Band, if the Band was actually Sonic Youth, but Sonic Youth was a Country Rock outfit circa 1868.  Acoustic or electric, Matthew always puts on his own show.  Newt and Ben have both played shows with Matt in the past, and a surprise appearance is not out of the question.  8pm

Friday:  Jackson-Jones Jazz Trio with Susannah Martin.  Jackson-Jones is great...Jackson-Jones with Susannah Martin is great squared.  If you haven't seen this group of musicians together you have been missing a really special gathering of amazing local talent.  8pm

Saturday:  Les Bicyclettes Blanches.  From Woodstock, New York, and Paris, France.  Les Bicyclettes Blanches sound something like a lo-fi French version of the Velvet Underground if the Velvets were French, Nico was the sole vocalist, and they were playing a Jefferson Airplane meets Air sort of dream rock.  8pm

Until Again

Raven
Also...Don't forget to mark Sept. 6 on your calendar for Ramsay Midwood.  Tickets are still available at the Raven for $5.  You will not want to miss this show.  I promise.

Culture News
by Press Release

The Prescott Downtown Mural Project proudly presents a celebration of Prescott culture and art history at the grand dedication of the “Art for All!” mural at 109.5 South Granite Street. Festivities begin Friday September 14th for Prescott’s school children who are invited to a day of “Mural Mice” history plays at 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm.

On Saturday Sept 15th, a daylong celebration hosted by the Victorian Society begins at noon and features local bands and friends of the arts and heritage. An art history play beginning at 5:00pm starts off the official dedication of the mural and at 6:00 pm long time friends and descendants of some of Prescott’s greatest artists within the mural reminisce and share stories about their relatives.

Artists in the mural include Gail Gardner, Sharlot Hall, Viola Jimulla, George Phippen, and Brian Gionelli. Mayor Rowley Simmons will make a proclamation and a stone setting ceremony placing the final piece in the center of the mosaic will mark the completion of the project. $10 suggested donation, parking is prevalent, and all are invited.

The Prescott Downtown Mural Project is a public arts initiative developing educational programs and murals around downtown Prescott. For more information or to donate time or funds, contact R.E. Wall at (928) 713-2296.
