The Highlands Center for Natural History will celebrate the opening of the James Learning Center with a Community Day Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Located on its campus in the Prescott National Forest, the James Learning Center is an example of how man and nature can integrate with minimal impact on natural resources. Design and construction focused on working with nature to provide heat, cooling and light and unused building materials were recycled rather than going to the landfill. The building relies entirely on solar power for electrical power and is in the process of receiving national certification as a green building.
Also on May 12 Ron Wright and his Rocky Road band will present the Worm Drive Musical from 11 to noon and local authors Beth Neely and Mary Young along with many others will sign their works. There will also be musical performances throughout the day. The public is invited to visit the facilities and stroll the trails.
The Highlands Center for Natural History helps children and adults discover the wonders of nature and become wise caretakers of the land. They foster a connection with the land through outdoor science education based on observation and discovery of the Central Arizona Highlands.
HCNH is located at 1375 S. Walker Road. For more information, call 776-9550.
