Public Lecture and Conversation with Prescott College President Dr. Dan Garvey
How many among us feel overwhelmed and powerless when faced with the current world situation? How can we respond creatively and begin to change the course of future events? Dr. Dan Garvey, President of Prescott College, addresses these issues on at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2007, at the Prescott College Crossroads Center, located off the alley behind the College's main buildings at 220 Grove Avenue in Prescott. For the past year Dr. Garvey has traveled the nation and presented "Living in a World of the Unimaginable," the first offering of Prescott College's multi-year national outreach project, the Imagine: Sustainable Futures Dialogues. He's met with groups from 50 to 500 from Washington State to Washington, D.C., learning from citizens and communities, public figures and community leaders what they see as the issues and possibilities of the present time. After each presentation Dr. Garvey has engaged the assembled groups in discussion on the opportunities available to citizens and leaders to imagine and create the future we would like to live in, both in our personal lives and for the public good. At the June presentation Dr. Garvey will present some of what he's learned from folks across the nation and the implications for the future.
Dr. Garvey's approach is rooted in the belief common within experiential education that all members of society, from students to public leaders, are co-creators and resources for social transformation. "Prescott College has always challenged our students and faculty to think confidently and creatively about what it is we can do to make the world a better place ," he explains. " Our students leave here with a solid grasp of the creative thinking and collaborative, practical action needed to make positive, lasting change. I hope the Dialogues will be a forum through which many others can come together to think collaboratively about solutions, and to find the hope and encouragement we all need in difficult times."
As one of the foremost American leaders in the field of Experiential Education, Dr. Garvey has served for over 30 years as an administrator, educator, and researcher and has authored more than 25 books and articles. He holds a Ph.D. in Social and Multi-cultural Foundations from the University of Colorado, Boulder, a Masters degree in Social Change from Cambridge-Goddard Graduate School of Social Change, and a Bachelors degree in Sociology from Worcester (MA) State College. He is the recipient of the University of New Hampshire's 1998 Outstanding Teaching Award, the 1997 Kurt Hahn Award recipient, and the 2002 Julian Smith Award.
