Independent press tends to rear its head, make yelping sounds and then fall over dead – or become so successful that large, corporate press buys it up.
Whether it ultimately succeeds or fails, independent press presents a great opportunity to publish your work. Art Merrill, editor of Prescott's independent news magazines Read It Here and readitnews.com will talk about "Thinking globally, writing locally for Read It Here magazine, an alternate press for grownups" when the Professional Writers of Prescott (PWP) meet at 7 PM on Wednesday, June 27 in the Founders Suite on the lower level of the Prescott Public Library.
Merrill says Read It Here magazine's "new journalism" allows more latitude in writing style and voice; its narrative journalism loosens the rules that remove the reporter from the "straight news" story (and, incidentally, gives the false impression of non-bias). You can break into Read It Here's new journalism as a creative writer, he says, even if you've never taken a journalism class.
After retiring from the Navy in 1994, Merrill wrote for Prescott Newspapers, Inc. until 2004. He then freelanced for national fishing and shooting magazines before starting Read It Here last year.
