"I caught a bunch of little-bitty trout at Lynx Lake," a friend said to me last week. "I think they're brook trout."
"Show me," I said, not that I doubted he knew what he was looking at, but because I'd never heard of brook trout being stocked in Lynx Lake. We fished the Lynx south shore last Saturday morning and, sure enough, there's a bunch of teeny brook trout in there. On Wednesday, Zen Mocarski at AZG&F told me that the brookies, originally intended for Tonto Creek, went into Lynx and Fain Lakes because Tonto's flows are too low. He's still checking, but as far as he knows, these are the first brook trout stocked in Lynx Lake. I'm certain they're the first brookies ever to go into Fain Lake.
AZG&F put 19,000 3-inch and 5-inch brook trout in Lynx Lake, plus another 3,000 5-inchers in Fain Lake in PV. Right now they're just food for the bass and for any of those 15,000 6-inch brown trout that went into Lynx last year. But the survivors should be fun to catch next spring, when they should be a more respectable 9 to 12 inches.
More notable stocking for the week of Oct. 23-27 include:
Lynx Lake - Stocked 10/2, next scheduled is 11/6.
Goldwater Lake - Scheduled for next week.
Fain Lake - Stocked this week, scheduled again for 11/13.
Mingus Lake - They actually stocked it again this week, even though it's little more than a mud hole. It's the last scheduled stocking 'til spring.
Verde River - Not scheduled 'til the week of Nov. 13. Deadhorse is on the schedule for the week of 11/6.
Oak Creek - Stocked this week, but only above Slide Rock.
Beaver Creek -Stocked last week.
West Clear Creek - Ditto, and it's the last one of the season
