On Labor Day Monday, cyclists from around Arizona will join the Verde Valley Cycling Coalition in a ride to honor their close friend Pete Bennett and all fallen riders. The ride’s intention is to make a visual statement against the carnage taking place on our streets. It is a chance to mourn those who have been killed. The ride hopes to raise awareness of bicycle safety and Share the Road. Who: Cyclists especially, but also runners, and others who legally share the road. What: For Pete’s Sake A ride dedicated to our friend Pete Bennett, who was tragically killed by a car while riding his bike July 19, 2007. When: Monday Labor Day, September 3rd, 7AM Why: to mourn those cyclists killed by motorists to raise awareness of cyclists on the road to have motorists know we only want to share the road we ride on to show that cyclists are not going away For Pete’s Sake is a free ride and non-supported. All riders are required to wear CPSC-Certified helmets and obey all Arizona Traffic Laws. Silence: We ask that the last 5 miles from Page Springs turn off to the accident site at Lower Red Rock Loop be ridden in silence and at a slow speed. This is where Pete was killed. The ride also request black arm bands be worn to honor fallen riders, red arm bands as well if you have had a bike/motor vehicle accident yourself. We are looking for a strong turnout.
