Goldwater gets rainbows

There’s some deer and elk hunting going on and it’s squirrel and quail season, too. If you weren’t drawn/already tagged out/got enough small game in the freezer, there’s still plenty of beautiful-weather time to angle for a few more trout.

Goldwater Lake is the only local spot to get a stocking of rainbows this week, but Fain and Mingus lakes got fish last week and there’s bound to be a few left for you. Fain also got an enormous bonus of 9,000 6-inch brook trout two weeks ago, fish originally intended for Tonto Creek but diverted to us because the creek flows are too low. The brookies are tiny, but in my experience little kids care more about action than size when it comes to fishing, so Fain Lake is a great choice if you’re really fishing for the kids instead of for yourself.

The lagoons at Deadhorse State Park are on the stocking schedule for next week; the Verde River is on for the week after that. Oak Creek gets fish next week and every other week through December. Beaver Creek is on for the week of Nov. 13. West Clear Creek already got its last stocking of the season the week of Oct. 16.

Rory Aikens, who puts up the fishing report on the Arizona game & Fish website, listed Goldwater Lake as one of the best places to fish right now.

“The top four picks for this week are all trout waters,” he says this week. “Goldwater Lake near Prescott is being stocked for the second time, the Colorado River along Casino Row below Davis Dam got a bonus stocking of 6,000 trout last week, the trout action at Big Lake in the White Mountains is super and Lees Ferry has ‘killer’ fishing.”
