The Granite Peak Folk Sessions Presents Burke, Coon & Norris, three of Arizona's finest pickers, featuring Arizona singer/storyteller Tony Norris, headline the Granite Peak Folk Sessions on Friday, October 19, 7pm at the Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Hall, 882 Sunset Drive, Prescott. The evening will also feature the substantial talents of California singer-songwriter James Hurley.
The gray beards don't lie. This trio is wise in the ways of mountain and Appalachian music. Bill Burke is one of the finest oldtime mandolin players in the Southwest and his tunecraft appears on many regional recordings. He is an instrument maker who's banjos, guitars and mandolins are much in demand and have been shown as works of art in galleries around the country. Fred Coon is a West Virginia boy who applies his mountain sensibilities to a unique banjo style. He has pithy stories of the backwoods characters and musicians he grew up with and a massive repetoire of fine oldtime tunes. Tony Norris is an engaging storyteller with a wry sense of humor. His battered Martin guitar and sweet tenor voice lay a solid foundation for the group's exploration of the people and music that lie beyond the end of the paved road. "Tony is one of the best folk entertainers Arizona can offer. He has a warm voice and a repertoire packed with unusual, great songs about people of the West." — Warren Miller, Sharlot Hall Museum (ret.)
One fan describes James Hurley as a blend of "Sting, Santana, and Harry Connick, Jr." Another simply said; "Sting meets the Beatles". However one tries to describe it, James' exposure to different countries, cultures, and his own natural inclinations have made his music a unique fusion of blues, jazz, rock, and pop that crosses musical boundaries. "James Hurley owns a rare combination of talents, songwriting that is intelligent in its eloquence... oh-so-silky vocals and harmonies... an unpretentious jazz-like virtuosity on guitar, and the guts to lay those talents bare." – Alan Fark, minor 7th Magazine
The Folk Sessions will present a special concert on Friday, October 26th with a return of the West Coast group Gypsy Soul. Their soulful, acoustic sound, with Celtic and
Americana roots, has been likened to artists Sarah McLachlan, Eva Cassidy, Allison Kraus, and Kate Bush. Their world-class music has earned them "Critics Choice" in over 50 publications. For more information email
