Tucked in a small shed behind Prescott College's Admissions office on Grove Ave, HUB – Helping Understand Bicycles – supports the green revolution and greater Prescott community, one bike at a time.
The student-founded and run program offers free bike repair instruction, bike-in movies, and classes on transportation self-sufficiency to any community member who seeks their services. They even help community members build their own custom bikes from scratch from donated parts.
"Instead of fixing their bike for them," says founder Martina Brimmer, "we give them the tools, show them the procedure, and then they can fix it themselves."
Since its inception in 2005, HUB has hosted monthly community bike rides and several "bike-in" movie nights: cycling-related short films viewers are encouraged to ride their bikes to. Last fall, HUB put on a women's bicycle maintenance workshop, which ran over four Saturdays.
Although the bike racks outside the shop are stacked with parts, the demand is far greater than the supply. HUB regularly turns away community members eager to get onto wheels of their own because donations haven't kept up with the pace of interested participants.
Be a green revolutionary! If you have a bike hanging in the garage that hasn't seen the sweet sight of a trail or pavement for a while - put it to good use in your community by donating it to HUB. Current hours of operation are Wednesdays and Fridays 11 am to 5 pm.
"It's better for the environment because bikes have no emissions, it's healthy for you because you'll get in shape, and you'll save a lot of money on gas," said student volunteer Jason Goodman. "Plus it has the potential to be a lot of fun."
