Micki Shelton loves a good play. And more specifically, she loves to write a good play. The award-winning playwright's latest, Fred and Mary: An Unconventional Romance, came into being over the last three months and in time for the 50th anniversary of the death of its protagonist, Mary Colter.

“I started writing at the end of February and that's about the fastest I've ever written a play,” Shelton said.

She'll be presenting the it through Tomorrow's Theater Tonight on Wednesday June 25th. Spanning the years 1876 through 1958, the quasi-historical play centers on the life of designer Mary Colter and her relationship with her boss, Fred Harvey.

Mary Colter designed Phantom Ranch, Hopi House, and six other buildings at the Grand Canyon, along with many others including her masterpiece, La Posada, in Winslow. The play imagines a romance between Colter and the principle of her design firm, Fred Harvey.

Ten people are reading Fred and Mary, many of them in dual roles. The play's large cast demands a large venue and so the readings depart their usual venue of Prescott Coffee Roasters for the Wild Iris Coffee House.

The reading is open to the public at no charge, though a $5.00 donation helps defray the cost of presenting the reading. Shelton will rely on audience feedback to help her refine the work for future readings.

The premiere reading of Fred and Mary: An Unconventional Romance takes place on Wednesday, June 25th, at 7:30 p.m., at the Wild Iris Coffeehouse, 124 S. Granite Street, Prescott. Gourmet coffee and baked goods are available for sale throughout the evening.
