The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Brought up on dime novels about the legendary bandit, 19 year old Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) idolized Jesse James completely. Unfortunately, when Ford finally achieves his dream of joining the James gang, he's quickly disillusioned by the double-crossings and humiliations he endures from the terrifyingly bi-polar James and his own brothers.

More fascinating than the murder itself, is the saga of Ford's life as a showman after James' death. His ordeals offer insight into the beginnings of the media celebrity in the United States.

This long but well constructed drama benefits from a superior score composed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Brad Pitt's turn as Jesse James is one the best performances of his career.

Playing on HBO December 8, 16, 24.

Pedro Almodovar Bad Education on Sundance

Bad Education
Gael García Bernal and Fele Martínez star in Pedro Almodóvar's melodramatic noir about deception, shifting identities and blackmail set against a tale of priestly sexual abuse. Almodóvar echoes classic Hitchcock thrillers like Vertigo to explore the urge to reinvent history via storytelling as different interpretations of the past play out in literature and in an imagined film.

Graphic sexuality and adult themes earned this film an NC-17 rating. Definitely not for children.
