Gone is the sparse, white exterior the bike shop had since moving to 710 White Spar ten years ago and it's place is a playful, eye-catching mural designed by local artist and activist Johanna Hawley.
Against a vibrant green backdrop with lively silhouettes of tree that mimic their three dimensional neighbors, Johanna chose the quote: "Whoever invented the bicycle deserves the thanks of humanity" to hint at all the benefits bicycling offers.
As her final brush strokes dried, Johanna explained that she offered her services because she wanted the community to know the broad benefits of bicycling as well as the caring culture Ironclad offers anyone who wants bicycling to be part of their life.
“Jim (Knaup, Ironclad’s owner) works so hard for the community, supporting people who bicycle and want to bicycle, so I was glad to help out,” Hawley said. “Bicycling offers a way for us to reconnect with our community as we boost our health as well as the health of the planet.”
This face lift and Johanna’s artistic message are a first step in Ironclad’s goal of becoming a focal point of bicycle culture in the Prescott area.
Both Johanna Hawley and Jim Knaup are cycling advocates who serve on the board of Prescott Alternative Transportation. PAT is a non-profit organization which works with local government agencies to create more choices in transportation for area residents. Their ultimate goal is transforming the central Yavapai area into a bicycle and pedestrian friendly community.
This spring, Ironclad will be offering new repair classes and social events at the shop fashioned for both new riders as well as current bicyclists ready to broaden their bicycling lifestyle.
For more information about upcoming classes, visit Ironclad’s web site for updates or drop by 710 White Spar in Prescott to learn more from Jim, Tim, Pete, Kyle, Jake and Will.
