On the Agenda: City Council Meeting Tuesday December 16, 2008

On the Agenda: City Council Meeting Tuesday December 16, 2008

At tomorrow's joint study/voting session at City Hall, council will consider asking voters to approve a 25-year extension of the 1-percent sales tax that has been in existence since 1996.

The Prescott Capital Needs Committee, the Open Space Committee, and the Citizens Tax Committee recently met to discuss an agreeable m.o. for approaching a sales tax extension vote in May 2009.

The consensus was a recommendation that streets and open space be separated. In addition, they recommended that extending the one-cent sales tax for streets projects be placed on the May 2009 ballot. The current one cent sales tax sunsets in 2015.

The Council must call an election in January and finalize the ballot language in February to place the issues before voters in May.

The council meeting is open to the public who will have an opportunity to comment.

AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Council will hold a 2 p.m. special meeting with the Prescott Unified School District board to continue discussion of a location for the proposed new high school.
  • Consideration of purchase for two open space parcels in the Granite Dells area

Council Recognizes Local Hot Shots from Fire, YC

Wildfire fighters and college soccer champions recognized by Prescott City Council.

At Tuesday's city council meeting, Emergency Services Director, Darrell Willis, presented representatives from the Granite Mountain Hot Shot wildfire fighting crew.

According to Willis, they are the only city sponsored Hot Shot Crew in the United States. "The crew, which works off of a national model and has Type 1 status, receives 50% of its funding through a grant, and is reimbursed when they travel to another jurisdiction to help in a fire fight."

The crew recently completed technical rescue training--which qualifies them to respond to rescues in extreme situations such as water and motor vehicle accidents that involve a high level of complexity and skill.

On the Agenda: Tuesday December 2, 2008

At their Tuesday Dec. 2 study session, Prescott city council members will consider abandoning an alley that runs in front of the Prescott College Crossroads Center and part of Garden Street south of Sheldon

The session is a continuation from an October meeting, when council agreed to postpone the matter to allow for more discussion between the college and the neighbors who may be affected by the action.

The city has split the two matters - allowing for the council to vote separately on the alley and the Garden Street issues.

Agenda Highlights

  • Consideration for purchasing utility easements necessary for the construction of The Big Chino water pipeline. The City and Prescott Valley propose offering a total of $72,740 for the 20 identified easements.

  • Consider 17 different code amendments, dealing with administration, plumbing, mechanical code, fuel gas code, electrical code, and the energy conservation code.
