Wildfire fighters and college soccer champions recognized by Prescott City Council.
At Tuesday's city council meeting, Emergency Services Director, Darrell Willis, presented representatives from the Granite Mountain Hot Shot wildfire fighting crew.
According to Willis, they are the only city sponsored Hot Shot Crew in the United States. "The crew, which works off of a national model and has Type 1 status, receives 50% of its funding through a grant, and is reimbursed when they travel to another jurisdiction to help in a fire fight."
The crew recently completed technical rescue training--which qualifies them to respond to rescues in extreme situations such as water and motor vehicle accidents that involve a high level of complexity and skill.
When not in action, the Hot Shot crew implements the local Definsible Space program. "They've created defensible space around 50% of the homes within Prescott," added Willis.
The Yavapai Community College Roughrider Soccer team, who have used Ken Lindley Field as their home for twenty years, were recognized by Council for winning their seventh National NJCAA Championship.
This season, they had a record of twenty-six wins, no losses, no ties--the first undbeaten season ever recorded in the the U.S. at any level.
"We try to do our best not only in recruiting good players but good people," said Coach Pantalione.
Members of the team were presented with chocolate soccer balls by the City of Prescott. The team reciprocated with a signed soccer ball to be displayed in City Hall.
