The South Spruce Fire is a 22 acre fire has been burning slash piles in a previous thinning area since Monday afternoon (10/27). Downtown Prescott awoke Tuesday morning under a thick inversion layer of smoke from the fire that's continuing to burn approximately 8 miles south of Prescott near South Spruce Ridge. The fire is of no threat to homes in the area and firefighters from Central Yavapai, The City of Prescott, Groom Creek Fire Department, and a Department of Corrections crew are assisting Forest Service personnel in combatting it. Fire fighters have a line around the perimeter and expect containment later this afternoon. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
A second fire was also reported on Monday, October 27 at 5:00 pm. The Union Fire was ¾ of an acre burning near the Mt. Union Lookout. Fire fighters quickly suppressed it and continue to monitor the area today. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Prescott National Forest fire officials have postponed prescribed burning projects for the remainder of the week on the forest.
